Description
To achieve coastal community resiliency in the face of rising seas and intensifying coastal storms, comprehensive disaster planning must include consideration of maritime operations and facilities. Hurricane Sandy, which hit the Port of New York and New Jersey ("Port") area on October 29, 2012, caused disruptions to maritime operations and facilities throughout the Port, which spans both the New York and New Jersey sides of New York Harbor. This study is shaped by two primary research objectives: (a) to identify "lessons learned" from Hurricane Sandy that can inform the maritime community's planning for future storm events and the long-term threats of climate change and sea level rise, both in the Port of New York and New Jersey and elsewhere.
