Gastroschisis is a congenital (birth) defect of the abdominal wall in which the baby's intestines, and sometimes other abdominal organs, protrude from the belly through a small hole. Colorado's rates of gastroschisis reflect this increasing trend. In 1994, the prevalence rate was 2.78 per 10,000 live births, and increased to 3.54 per 10,000 live births in 2011. Rates of gastroschisis are particularly high among younger mothers, including teen moms....

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious form of abuse committed against a current or former boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, or other romantic partner. IPV is often not a single, isolated event; rather it is an ongoing, violent dynamic which may ebb and flow in dangerous cycles. Unfortunately, IPV is pervasive in the United States; over 12 million people in the country experience IPV each year, and more than 80 million people are victimized at...

Excessive alcohol use, including binge drinking, contributes to an estimated 1,635 deaths annually in Colorado, which is an average of almost five deaths each day. Excessive drinking is associated with harms to individuals (e.g., violence, injuries, cancers, and high blood pressure) and also has large costs to society. Excessive alcohol use cost Colorado $5 billion in 2010, almost half of which was paid by government. Binge drinking contributes the...

Public health officials in collaboration with other health professionals are closely monitoring the patterns of use, particularly among adolescents and youth for whom marijuana use is illegal, and who might be at a greater risk of adverse physical and mental health outcomes than adult marijuana users. A growing body of literature suggests certain areas of the brain continue to develop well into a person's twenties and that adolescent use of substances,...

Description
Suicide is a public health issue of significant concern nationally and in the state of Colorado. The adolescent population is a particularly vulnerable group which is in many ways less understood than adults, and whose suicides rank high in terms of years of life lost. Additionally, suicides in this population could be more easily preventable through parental interaction and limiting access to lethal means.

For years, Colorado has been labeled the "leanest" state in the United States for having low adult obesity prevalence. The adult obesity prevalence has been rising in the U.S. over the past three decades. Colorado is not immune from this trend. One theory is that the influx of migration to Colorado has brought in heavier people and contributed to the increasing obesity trend. The purpose of this report is to explore this theory by estimating the...

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic or stressful experiences, such as abuse, which occur during childhood or adolescence. Existing research shows that these negative early life experiences have long-lasting effects on an individual's well-being. However, the burden of these experiences among Colorado adults was previously unknown. Results from the initial recruitment phase showed that ACEs are common, with nearly two-thirds of participants...
